BATTLE CRY
Susan Milchman
i unfold into another dawn
a virgin a fawn a tragedy
the sky is shedding night bones
it is swelling but not yet full
death is practicing
& the birds are still sleeping
the trees tell me i am trespassing
the knives are still sharpening
& the hearts are busy
stitching up their soldiers
